Moving out for the first time is costly and you’ll want to get the most out of your money to ensure you have everything you need for your day to day living requirements.
In this guide we cover the essential furniture and electrical items you need when moving into your first home.
Firstly, begin to make a list of the things you already have so you can tick them off, if you are moving out of your parents home maybe you have a bed and desk you can take with you or a TV and a bookcase. Family and friends are often keen to help out first time movers and rally round to find items no longer needed by themselves but that could be useful for you – Things like Mugs, Glasses and spare Saucepans.
Furniture Essentials
Furniture essentials, such as a sofa can be picked up free or very cheaply second hand – you might just need to borrow a man and a van to help you out!
Try looking on your local Facebook selling pages to see what you can find as well as sites such as Gumtree or Freecycle. Another option is local charity shops as many have a furniture division and often new sofas are sold at second hand prices.
If you do choose to buy new, take advantage of 0% finance options where possible. For example, DFS offer interest free credit meaning you can get a decent two or three seater sofa starting from £6.22 a month for 4 years. This would leave you with more money to spend on other necessities and you probably wouldn’t miss the £6.22 each month.
Dining tables are often easily found cheap too because as like sofas, they take up a lot of space so sellers are often desperate to get rid of them quickly. A nice tablecloth or a lick of chalk paint can help it look like new if it’s a little worse for wear or not quite the colour you were after.
Electrical Essentials
When it comes to electrical items, we recommend purchasing from a reputable seller to ensure the product is safe to use and in good condition. Obviously there are the well known brands such as AO and Currys but there are also many smaller, local companies that sell reconditioned machines for a fraction of the cost.
Although, if you are buying new, remember to go via a cashback site to get the most of your money! Quidco or TopCashback often offer good deals.
Other Essentials
You’ll need to think about other essentials for your home such as cleaning materials, ironing board, curtains or blinds and a clothes airer. Again, many of these things can be found second hand or from the supermarket.
