If you are wanting to save money or cut down on spending to make money go further, second-hand or Refurbished purchases can really help you out. In this guide, we have put together five of the things we think it is sensible to buy second-hand/refurbished.

1. Vehicles

It’s a well-known fact that as soon as you drive a brand new car off the forecourt the vehicle decreases in value quickly so, we think its best to let someone else take that hit and grab yourself a used bargain! For example, a brand new Ford Fiesta ‘trend’ off the production line can cost £15,995. That’s a basic model with three doors, a small petrol engine and no choice of colour. A second-hand Ford Fiesta that is less than one year old with 5k miles and the more advanced ‘Titanium’ model from a car supermarket will set you back £11,999. That’s £4000 difference in just 6-12 months. You’ll also have a range of toys to play with such as cruise control and parking sensors that you wouldn’t get with the brand new lower spec Fiesta. What could you do with the ‘leftover’ £4000? Holidays, home improvements, savings? Go for a two-year-old, 2017 model with 21k miles on it and you’ll pick one up for £8000. What would you do with the ‘spare’ £8000?! It’s a lot of money and worth thinking about heavily before you purchase.

We compared these prices from the main dealer themselves https://www.ford.co.uk/ and https://www.motorpoint.co.uk/ a car supermarket with branches across the UK.

2. Furniture

When it comes to pieces of furniture like Dining Tables, Coffee Tables, TV Stands and Wardrobes it’s always worth scouring your local buy and sell pages on Facebook, eBay or Gumtree to see what bargains can be had. For example, a Dining Table and 4 chairs from SCS can set you back £459, whereas exactly the same set can be found new on eBay for £269.99 (The photo used is even the same one!) and a similar design can be found on Gumtree for around £150 – a £300 saving on the new SCS one.

3. Tech Products

Whether you are looking for a new Mobile Phone, Games Console, Kindle or Tablet we recommend looking at second-hand or refurbished deals initially to see if you can save some money. It is worth buying some products from a retailer if you prefer to have a warranty. For example, a new Kindle retails at £69.99 but a refurbished previous model (by Amazon) retails at £44.99 presently. A saving of £25! An older model on eBay can be found cheaper again for £34.99 meaning you can actually buy two older style Kindles for the price of one brand new one!!

Apple also offer a direct refurbished product shop, meaning you can easily save £100+ on an iPhone.

4. Exercise Equipment

Many people have good intentions of using that exercise bike everyday but it often ends up as an expensive clothes horse at the end of the bed!! Take a look on eBay, Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree first to see if you can pick up a second-hand bargain before potentially splashing out £200 on a new piece of kit!

5. Films, Books, Games and Music

These items can be pretty costly brand new so if you can wait a month or so after the release of the latest Call of Duty or Waterstones best seller, do! People will use the product and trade it in or sell it pretty quickly once they are done with it meaning you are able to pick up a bargain!!

For example Fifa20 on Xbox One is currently available for pre-order at £49.99. Fifa19 is currently available on the same website by a third party second hand for just £12.12!! (Scroll to the bottom of the page to find it!)
